The vehicle pursuit ended with the fleeing driver crashing into a cornfield near Ghent, and being booked into the Lyon County Jail, Lincoln County Sheriff Chad Meester said in a news release.

Around 12:18 p.m. Monday, Marshall Police began pursuing a driver who was identified as having outstanding warrants, said Marshall Public Safety Director Jim Marshall.

“We pursued the individual for six miles,” before terminating the pursuit, Marshall said. When local officers are in a vehicle pursuit, they have to weigh factors like speed, traffic, and the safety of the public in deciding whether to keep going, he said.

Meester said Lincoln County dispatch was notified around 12:40 p.m. that the pursuit suspect was traveling west on Minnesota Highway 19 in a tan Jeep Liberty. The suspect, identified as Juan Antonio Ruiz, had an outstanding Lyon County felony warrant for assault, and a Department of Corrections warrant for predatory offender — failure to provide notice of address change, Meester said in a news release.

Lincoln County law enforcement later spotted the Jeep, identified its license plate number, and attempted to make a traffic stop. However, the driver did not stop, Meester said. Meester said law enforcement pursued the suspect for about 38 miles across state and county highways and gravel township roads, at speeds upwards of 70 to 75 miles per hour.

The Lincoln and Lyon County Sheriff’s departments coordinated to deploy a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle, but the suspect drove around the device and into the ditch, Meester said.

The pursuit eventually entered Minneota. Minneota Police Chief Bill Bolt said he attempted to box the driver in, but was unsuccessful, and the Jeep turned east onto Minnesota Highway 68. Bolt said he continued pursuing the suspect on Highway 68. The vehicle hit a second tire deflation device deployed by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, and went into the ditch. It stopped a short distance into a cornfield near the intersection of Highway 68 and 330th Street.

Meester said Ruiz was treated by medical services, and later booked into the Lyon County Jail. Ruiz is being held for court.
